Launch-week Steam is still asking How to clean the pens??? Players mash keyboard and Xbox face buttons looking for a scrub verb so they can “put animals there.” A second thread, Brooms?, is the same farm from the other end: someone G-threw the broom into a trash bin and now wants a restock. This page answers both. It is not a hidden hotkey. It is rental, placement, and a tool you should not toss.

If you have not bought paperwork yet, stop and follow getting started. Keys only matter after a crate is on the ground. Bindings live on controls. Yard layout is the farm map.

You do not mop a stall to unlock it

Species pens open when you rent them on Management, not when you shine the floor. The active chicken yard shows green text on the sign. An unrented duck or turkey stall looks empty and still rejects a hen. That rejection is why people hunt a clean command — the pen looks dirty or locked, so they sweep. Sweeping does not pay rent.

Correct sequence:

1. Buy the matching license and animal on Market.
2. Open Management and rent the species pen.
3. Wait for the green sign.
4. Unpack the delivery box outside the fence.
5. Walk the bird in and press C to place.

May’s animal patch blocked unpacking inside pens because birds stopped moving or laying. If you already opened a crate in the stall, that freeze is a known clip bug, not a hygiene fail. Restart the day was the old workaround. Details: known issues.

There is no documented “clean pen” bind on keyboard or controller. Launch’s left-handed preset remaps walk, look, interact, place, and Tab. It does not add a mop. Steam Input works with Xbox-style pads; map interact and place to two buttons, then rent before you place.

What the broom actually does

A broom exists. Reviews and threads mention it as a sweep tool you carry, not as a stall unlock. You pick it up, you sweep debris, you put it down. It is not upgradable — one Mixed review called that out. It is also easy to lose. G is throw. Demo and launch maps added extra trash bins. Throw the broom into a bin and you have a Steam thread.

If you still have the broom:

• Carry it like a tray. Do not G it near a bin.
• Sweep if the yard looks cluttered. That is cosmetics and pathing, not a rental gate.
• Put it on a shelf or a known hook when you are done. Furniture placement uses Confirm / Rotate — farm expansion.

If you already threw it:

• Check the floor and the extra trash bins from the May animal patch before you buy anything.
• Open Market. Launch gave each store item its own delivery box. If Furniture or a tools row lists a broom, buy one, unpack outside, place it, and stop throwing it.
• Official 4 September notes do not list a broom restock SKU. If Market has no row, you wait on a patch. Do not take a Bank loan for a maybe.

The broom is not how you seat a hen. The green sign is.

Pens that “will not take” an animal

When a stall refuses a crate, work this list before you sweep:

• Wrong species. Chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys each want their own yard. Rank birds on the animal tier list.
• Rent not paid. Management, not Market. Look for the green sign.
• Unpacked inside the fence. Back out, interact in open space, then C-place.
• Still holding the broom or a tray. Drop or shelf the tool, then pick the bird.
• Sticky computer UI. Close Market with its own X before you place. ESC-in-store was a demo investigation item.

A second hen belongs in the same chicken pen until that yard is full. Renting pen two is a cash decision — profit planner — not a cleaning decision.

Controller, left hand, and “I cannot find the command”

The original Steam post tried Xbox controller and keyboard/mouse. Both lack a clean verb. On a pad, interact and place must be two different buttons or you will unpack inside the stall you meant to sweep. The left-handed preset is a remap, not a new action. If a handheld stutters, that is system requirements, not dirt.

What to do tonight

1. Rent the matching pen. Confirm the green sign.
2. Unpack outside. Place with C.
3. Keep the broom off G and out of bins.
4. Fill food and water. Sweeping does not feed birds.
5. If the stall still rejects the species, it is the wrong yard — farm map.
